Ok, I didn't really, but that would have been hilarious! I did one internally. I was so excited because I LOVE chex mix, dislike those dark rye chips (or whatever they are called...all I know is that every bag I buy has more of those than the actual chex cereal!), and dislike the price tag for a tiny bag that is only 1/2 full when I open it. So, I make my own, leave out those rye chips, and have tons all to myself (I have slight food hoarding tendancies). Ok, that's not true either...I share a teensy weeny bit with the family. But just a bit. Honestly, not a lot.
Homemade Chex Mix
8 cups Chex cereal (mix your favorites...I used 4 cups of corn and 4 cups of rice Chex)
1 cup pretzels
1 cup cheese crackers
1/2 cup butter
4 1/2 tsps worchestershire sauce
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
Get out a large roasting pan...like the one you use for your Thanksgiving turkey. Get all your ingredients together.
I forgot to put the pretzels and goldfish in the pic...sorry.
Once the butter is melted, remove from heat and add all the other seasonings and worchestershire sauce. Mix until the seasonings dissolve.
Pour the butter mix all around the cereals and mix really well. You don't want to see the sauce on the bottom of the pan. Just keep tossing gently until everything is well coated.
Stir the mix around every 20 min or so to make sure everything is getting distributed evenly. And that's it!!! The best homemade Chex Mix ever!
Now, try to not burn your mouth eating it right out of the oven! Store in a sealed container and hide from the rest of the family...I mean, share with the rest of the family. Yeah. That's what I meant.

ReplyDeleteI can't stand those Brown chips either. Maybe they should have a vote concerning their place in the snack mix. Lol. I also miss the peanuts. If they were removed to make things better for those with allergies, there is still a warning on the bag that it's processed in the vicinity of other things containing nuts, so they're still a no-no. I've made the tried and true old recipe a million times and I must say that this recipe looks better. I don't know why I never thought to pour the seasoning over the mix. I just followed the directions given the old way and melted the butter and seasoning in the bottom of the pan and then tried to coat things from the bottom up. Your way is going to be easier and will coat better I think. Thank you for sharing.

DeleteI hate the brown chips in the packaged Chex Mix. I feed them to my dog. LOL The homemade tastes ten times better than the packaged. My dad used to make for us around Christmas as kids.

ReplyDeleteIf you store this in a sealed container (or bag) it should stay fresh for a week-ish. Honestly, it never lasts more than a day or two at my house! And you are lucky to get all of it to yourself! Yum!
